Breathable lime mortar protects historic brick and stone properly.

Specialist lime pointing for brick and stonework across Hereford and Herefordshire. Breathable lime mortar repairs, repointing and sympathetic restoration of older and listed properties.
Older brick and stone walls were built to breathe. Repointing them in modern cement traps moisture inside the wall, freezes it in winter and slowly destroys soft bricks, stone and the joints around them.
We carefully rake out failed mortar, prepare the joints and re-point in a lime mortar mix that suits the building — colour matched, sympathetically finished, and applied at the right time of year with the right curing conditions.
From small areas of failed pointing to whole-property repointing, we work on cottages, farmhouses, period homes and listed buildings across Hereford and the wider county.

Lime finish detail
Lime pointing is the process of raking out old mortar joints in stone or brickwork and refilling them with a traditional lime mortar. Lime is breathable, flexible and sympathetic to historic walls — unlike modern cement, which can trap moisture and damage soft bricks or stone.
Most pre-1919 properties (and many later ones) were built with lime mortar and rely on it to manage moisture. Repointing them in hard cement can trap damp inside the wall, leading to frost damage and spalling. Lime is almost always the right answer.
Yes — we carry out brick pointing and stone pointing including rubble stone, dressed stone and mixed walls. We match the mortar mix, colour and joint profile to the existing wall.
Lime needs more curing time and careful weather protection, so it is a slower process — but the long-term result for an older building is far better than a fast cement repair that fails in a few years.
